Dallas Is One of the Most Underrated Cities In America
I will stand by the belief that Dallas is one of the most underrated cities in the United States. But I can also admit that it’s one of those cities where you need guidance on where to go and what to do. It’s not a city where you can just show up and find the good spots. So as someone who has lived there, let me enlighten you!
At its core, Dallas has all the things that you look for in a major city: good food, all major sports, art and museum culture, a concert scene, etc. Yet it still isn’t mentioned along the likes of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami or even it’s neighbor Houston. Why? I have no idea. But I think part of it may be that the outside image people have isn’t actually the vibe of Dallas.
People think country and cowboys. When in actuality, it’s more tied to wealth and philanthropy. You may have heard “Keep Austin Weird”, but have you heard “Keep Dallas Pretentious”? It’s surprising to me that those who enjoy the finer things in life don’t know about the gem that is Dallas, Texas. Or maybe they do and it’s just this country’s best kept secret?
However, as of late, people might finally be starting to take notice that its a city where people like to flaunt and spend money. Various hospitality groups from other cities are opening up franchises in Dallas. First Miami’s Komodo opened up shop, next will be Catch, and then even Drai’s is tapping into the Dallas clientele.
If boujee isn’t your style, then there’s still plenty to enjoy! For starters, they have NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, UFL and PLL teams. So not matter the time of year, there’s a sporting event somewhere in the city. There are also various museums around the city from the Perot Museum of Nature and Science to the JFK Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to the Frontiers of Flight Museum. There are also multiple art galleries to be found in the Design District.
But in general, Dallas is a city that revolves around drinking. And there are no shortage of bars and lounges. Whether you spend time in the suburbs like Frisco or Irving, or you want to be more in the mix of Uptown or even Deep Ellum, you can find uppity places with dress codes or more casual spots for a night out with friends.
And don’t forget the BBQ. Locals will forever fight over which place is best, but you’ll have to try them for yourself. The undisputed Top 3 tends to be Hard Eight’s, Hutchin’s, and Terry Black’s. (Yes, Keith Lee fell in love with and preferred Hutchin’s over Terry Black’s)
So if you ask me, this country needs to put some respect on Dallas’ name. It’s definitely highly underrated.
Have you ever been to Dallas? Or do you have a certain view of it that maybe has been changed by this post? Let me know! And stay tuned for how I would recommend spending a weekend in Dallas.
Signed,
